Air Troubleshooting

OVERVIEW

This checklist is designed to help you diagnose and troubleshoot problems with Loxone Air devices that do not work as intended or appear as offline due to radio interference or poor reception.

CHECKLIST

  • Has the Air device been properly leant in?
    • Loxone Air learn-in procedure: Search for device with Air Search => Create device => Save in Miniserver. For further details on how to learn a device, please refer to our documentation.
  • Check the Air Base Extension is online.
    • Open the device status (“Miniserver Tab” => Traffic Light icon), the Airbase must be green, status = online, and version number highlighted in Green.
  • Check for radio interference causing communication problems using channel check report in the Detailed Device Information
    • (See explanation below). Is the result in sections 1&2?
      • If the currently used channel is busy? If so change to a different frequency. You can find details on the frequency change here .
      • If no channel is free, continue the analysis with the next point.
  • Where is the Air Base mounted?
    • If the Air Base is installed on the DIN rail directly next to the Miniserver, please reposition it. There should be at least 2 breaker units between Air Base and Miniserver.
  • Which antenna is used and where is it placed?
    •  If the antenna is inside the distribution cabinet, try moving the antenna outside the cabinet if possible (metal cabinets can restrict the Air signal)
    • Perform a channel check without an antenna on the Air Base Extension. If a better result is obtained, check the following:
      • Use another antenna and carry out a channel check again.
      • There is probably a source of interference near the Air Base Extension. Possible causes of interference are, for example, other radio systems such as baby monitors, radio headsets and other devices which use the 868MHz band. N.B. It is also possible that non-wireless devices in relatively close proximity to Air device can emit interference, these can include HDMI Matrixes and TVs.
  • Check the location of the affected Air unit
    • Do a channel check on the Air unit. If the device is battery powered it must be woken up first the process for this is:
      • Open Loxone config and connect to your Miniserver and load out from it.
      • Ensure the Air Base or Actuators are not updating.
      • Press the button on the device.
      • In “Device Status” right click on the actuator and select “Wake Device”
      • Now perform the detailed device information request
    • If the currently used channel is occupied, select a different channel (see here for instructions). Check the surrounding area as well for interference sources such as baby monitors, radio headphones, etc. using the 868MHz band.
    • Check nearby Air devices which are working fine (do the channel check of these and compare the result)
  • Check the connection of the device
    • When assessing the quality of the connection, it is important that the entire route (including all intermediaries and in both directions) be taken into account. If, therefore, a device does not function satisfactorily, although a good signal level is displayed in the device status, then an intermediary with a poorer connection may be the cause. If, therefore, an intermediary is displayed as a route to the device in question, then the reception quality of (power-supplied/repeater) devices should also be checked. To support this analysis, information from the detailed device info (see below) can be used. In the case of poor reception, a higher gain antenna can improve the reception (for devices with a changeable antenna).
    • Adding Air devices with the intermediary/repeater function (e.g. Smart Socket Air) can also improve the connection.

How to Obtain Detailed Device Information:
This information is obtained by double-clicking on an air device in the device status. You can find more details here .

Channelcheck:
This provides a report for each available channel to the Air Base or Air Device, Each line shows what percentage of the total background noise resides at what “volume” (intensity) level. This is divided into 6 sections (1-6) 1 being of the lowest intensity and 6 being of the highest intensity.

The ideal state is over 90% in the section 1 and the rest in the section 2. This corresponds to a free channel without disturbances, whereby the useful signals are received well.

For significant numbers (> 10%) in area 3 or higher, another channel should be checked. If no free channel is found, proceed with step 4 above. In these areas, medium strength signals are received, often indicating an external disturbance. Loxone Air devices are designed so that they do not interfere with other devices themselves, so a “listen before talk” strategy is implemented to ensure the channel is free. If, however, it is detected the channel is occupied to a large extent and these is lots of interference, then the Loxone Air device may not communicate in a timely manner and delays may be experienced.

Examples:
Fully free channel without interfering signals: 100% in the area 1.
Example for a free channel:
Channel 0: Free: 100%, Occupied: 0%; 1: 100%, 2: 0%, 3: 0%, 4: 0%, 5: 0%, 6: 0%

Heavily used channel with strong background signals: High values een in the sections 5 and 6.
Example of a channel occupied:
Channel 100: Free: 1%, Occupied: 98%; 1: 0%, 2: 0%, 3: 0%, 4: 3%, 5: 58%, 6: 39%

Signals in the sections 4-6 are interpreted as occupied channels, while signals in the ranges 1-2 are so weak that they can still be transmitted.
